Retrieving articles on "therapy"
from MEDLINE
Here, we will attempt retrieval of article citations
on therapy of a disease. Let us take common cold as an example.
The best
MeSH terms to use in this instance are: common cold with the subheadings - drug
therapy, diet therapy and therapy. If you are going to search for the therapeutic
value of a drug - say zinc acetate, then the drug name (nearest MeSH term) with
the subheading therapeutic use.
The boolean combination you'd use is 1.
common cold/drug therapy OR common cold/diet therapy OR common cold/therapy 2.
zinc acetate/therapeutic use
Modality of search
Click
on Preview/Index, select MeSH terms from the dropdown, type in common cold in
the search box, and then click on Index. From the results, you'd choose common
cold / diet therapy and the other two options mentioned. (Keep the control key
pressed, as you select these options. Click on AND.
A search strategy:
("common cold/diet therapy"[MeSH Terms] OR "common cold/drug therapy"[MeSH
Terms] OR "common cold/therapy"[MeSH Terms]) Will be incorporated in the search
box at the top. Click on Go You get 856 citations.
This can be further
refined by adding MeSH terms "randomized controlled trial" OR "double blind method"
OR placebo with the above while searching. You then get articles where concrete
trials have been carried out for therapy.
