Friends of QMed
(Institutions)
When you choose to become a Friend of QMed, you are not only supporting us, but committing to use the support we provide you, to make a change in your institution. The support we offer will cover one or more of the following, based on mutual discussion, customized for your institution:
The core offering:
- Lectures on literature searching (approximately one hour duration) in your premises . These will cover the basic principles one needs to know to do a structured literature search and to critically evaluate information resources as well as articles. Once participants go through these, it is much easier to learn the nuances of each resource and exploit the same for patient care, academics, research The topics we will cover are:
- Information resources in medicine
- PubMed
- Evidence based resources (Cochrane Library, UpToDate and others)
- Appraisal of resources
Students and faculty in the institution are welcome to attend these lectures.
-
Train the trainer programs : We will train select* individuals through in-depth training programs and additional short sessions, on the above topics. We will give them access to our online training modules. The short sessions maybe face to face or through Skype / webinars etc. These individuals will then be local resources who will teach / help a larger population
* Limited number of individuals from each institute will be trained as trainers. The exact number and the specific individuals will be chosen after deliberations with the parent institute.
- Creation of "LinkOut" in PubMed for your library’s journal holdings. LinkOut is a facility offered by PubMed by which any institution can upload the list of journals available in the library and the years of availability. When this is done, anyone in the institution doing a PubMed search can immediately identify which of the references is available in the institution’s library collection. This is of immense help to the individual and also ensures that the library collection is well utilized. It ultimately justifies the budget for journal subscriptions.
Additional possibility:
- In-depth training programs in literature searching : These will be on the above topics and will be of about 3 hours duration for a fixed number of participants per session. They will cover the above in greater detail with real time demonstration and practical exercises. Depending on the institutional facilities, further hands on options can be explored
Future plans:
- Library computerization related assistance . Includes guidance on creating a computerized library catalog and automating library operations
- Development of your Institutional repository . This is a facility by which your institution’s theses, publications, presentations etc will be stored in a repository and made accessible through your Intranet or the Internet.
We will also work with the institution in measuring the impact of the programs to monitor the progress and constantly introduce improved measures.
